DefenseNow offers small classes and quality firearm instruction for all skill levels. We have trained students from diverse cultures, backgrounds, ages, and occupations. Many of our students have been active or former military and security professionals. We have often taught classes to adults who have never fired a handgun or rifle before. The DefenseNow method of training delivers success.

Founder of DefenseNow
Steven began his career in 1999 while enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps attached to Combat Service Support Group 3, 3d MarDiv. He completed the Marine Corps Marksmanship Instructors School at the Puuloa Range Training Facility, Ewa Beach, HI. While on active duty he rated the Rifle Qualification Badge (Expert 4th Award) and Pistol Qualification Badge (Expert 3rd Award). He is a graduate of several specialized DoD courses , ranging from firearms training to counter terrorism.
He has medaled in military and civilian competition shooting events. He is a certified NRA Pistol and Shotgun Instructor and a Maryland Qualified Handgun Instructor. Steven has extensive knowledge on multiple weapons systems as well as how to effectively employ them.
TJ
Firearms Instructor
TJ has over 20 years experience within the firearms industry as an instructor, gun store owner, and armorer. His interest in firearms began when researching WWII bring-back firearms. While continuing his education in small-arms throughout his career, TJ has also participated in competitive shooting events.
He is a former board member of the Virginia Gun Collectors Association and is a volunteer firearms trainer for Operation Blazing Sword. TJ is a certified NRA Pistol, Shotgun, and Firearms Safety Inside the Home Instructor.

We progress from the simple to the complex. Beginning with the basics will allow students to learn skills quickly, increasing the possibility of early success and building self-confidence.
We will evaluate each student and gauge the type and amount of instruction he or she requires.
We will break down a skill and teach one part at a time. The instructor will ensure each student digests the information and perform the step before moving on to the next piece.

Pistol Safety and Skill Improvement Classes
Basics of Pistol Shooting & Range Safety
90/Class
Two hour training session learning the basics of pistol shooting & range safety. One hour of classroom instruction and one hour of live fire on the range. The student will learn loading & unloading, fundamentals of marksmanship and range etiquette. A great introduction class for new or returned shooters. You may bring your own handgun or one can be provided for you. Ammunition will be a separate purchase.
Pistol Skill Improvement
75/Class
One hour range time with an instructor tailored to assist shooters improve upon their current skill level. You set the goal and let the instructor design a program specially fit for you. Whether you are simply looking to build a strong understanding of the basics, gain a higher level of proficiency for shooting or you are looking to get into competitive shooting, this course is for you. You may bring your own handgun or one can be provided for you. Ammunition will be a separate purchase.

Concealed Carry
Virginia Concealed Handgun Training
Virginia Concealed Handgun and Safety Course
90/Class
This is a 3-hour course within a classroom. Course topics include: causes of firearm accidents, firearm safety, ammunition, prohibited and restricted places to carry, transporting, self-defense, warning shots, third-party defense, emergency services, could v. should scenarios, reciprocity, red flag laws and the application process. There are additional thought provoking discussions about survival stress, developing a defensive plan. No range time.
